COVINGTON GARDEN CLUB HISTORY
The Covington Garden Club was founded October 17, 1940 by 54 men and women for the purpose of beautifying and improving the town of Covington, Louisiana. These goals have continued to be the main focus of this group throughout the past 79 years. Some of the projects and activities sponsored by the club include Arbor Day plantings in memory of deceased members and family, Cleanest City Contest and the Northshore Food Bank (formerly Covington Food Bank). Each month, for the Garden of the Month Award, the club features and recognizes an outstanding residence and business for the beauty of their gardens.
Two large garden projects the members maintain are Triangle Park in downtown Covington and the Healing Garden at the Columbia Street Landing near the Bogue Falaya River. A grant was received from Shell Oil Company to create the Healing Garden. It is a special place in the town used for concerts, weddings, photo opportunities, and meditation. The Blue Star Marker located at Highway 21 and 36 was also sponsored by our club. It is planted with giant variegated liriope.
Many informative programs have been presented by the club over the years. Some of the topics have included flower arranging, horticulture, conservation, ornithology, insect control, and environmental issues.
An annual event every Spring is a Standard Flower Show in which awards are given to members. A style show and luncheon is held every other Fall to raise scholarship funds which is awarded to a rising college junior who is a resident of St. Tammany parish majoring in horticulture or related disciplines. It was an honor for our club member, Zelda Rose, to serve as state president in 1983 and the club sponsors the Louisiana Garden Club Federation's Zelda Rose Award annually in her memory.
The goals established by the first members in 1940 will continue to guide the Covington Garden Club in the future.
