THE FOLLOWING NATIONAL GARDEN CLUB, INC. OBJECTIVES ARE COVERED IN OUR CONTINUING PROJECTS
CONSERVATION: Litter control – CGC sponsors and participates in Cleanest City Contest and/or Keep Covington Beautiful activities; Water; Wildflower; Wildlife. Members give conservation reports during the year.
BIRD STUDY: Our members have bird feeders and bird baths. We plant and preserve bird habitats and participate in bird count. We give ornithology reports to the members.
BUTTERFLY STUDY: Our members plant to attract butterflies.
GARDENING: Members engage in some aspect of gardening and/or help in maintaining our Healing Garden that was established in 2000, Triangle Park in downtown Covington and Blue Star marker located at intersections of Highway 21 and Highway 36. Members give horticulture hints reports during the year.
SCHOLARSHIP: 100% Participation in supporting a St. Tammany parish resident who will be a rising college junior majoring in the field of horticulture or related disciplines. Scholarship is valued at $500.00. Club Project since 1974.
TREE PLANTING: CGC plants trees in memory of deceased loved ones for Arbor Day.
SCHOOLS: CGC has several members currently studying or have completed work in all four NGC sponsored schools - Environmental School, Flower Show School, Gardening School and Landscape Design School.
OTHER ACTIVITIES:
CGC members exhibit floral arrangements and horticulture exhibits at the St. Tammany Parish Fair. Members also serve in receiving and identifying specimens since 1960.
Assist in anti-litter campaign in Cleanest City Contest and/or other civic clean-up projects with Keep Covington Beautiful since 1958.
We participate in Wildlife Conservation and Environmental Activities since 1940.
Endorse Membership in the National Floral Societies. CGC has been involved since 1940.
Reinforce the Benefits in subscribing to The National Gardener.
The Covington Garden Club and its members support NGC Member Services by purchasing National Garden Clubs, Inc.’s “Vision of Beauty” calendars; purchase of president and past president pins; purchase of Handbook For Flower Shows, Revised 2017-2nd Edition and flower show ribbons.
We sponsor the Louisiana Garden Club Federation “Zelda Rose Education Exhibit Award” each Year with a donation of $50.00. Zelda Rose was a CGC member and president of the LGCF from 1983-1985.
We invite guests/visitors to many of our special events, such as our Christmas Tea, Flower Show, Rummage Sale and Fashion Style Show (held in alternating years). These activities allow potential new members to meet the members and to discover our club’s many activities.
CGC pays $95.00 for a club member to attend Flower Show School. Interested members submit a written request to the President for consideration by the board. The purpose is to increase Flower Show judges within the club.
