Dear Covington Garden Club Members,
What an unusual spring and summer this has been. We have cancelled meetings and activities, social distanced, worn masks, washed our hands more frequently, quarantined ourselves, all due to COVID-19. But the silver lining was that we were able to spend more time in our gardens! What resilient and positive people gardeners are.
The Board has decided to move forward with our usual programs for the upcoming garden club year. It will all be done per social distancing guidelines. So, here are a few of the things we have lined up:
“Happiness is Hydrangeas” will start our year. We will learn about growing vegetables in an “Urban” setting. If you are planning on starting or revamping a garden, some basic garden designs will be explored. We will “Jingle, Jingle, Mix & Mingle” at the Christmas party. We will also explore grafting camellias; environmental issues (reports on ornithology and conservation); a presentation on “Garden to Glass”; tips on design and exhibiting horticulture in preparation for our annual flower show, “Happiness Is Homemade.”
We continue to support the Northshore Food Bank; Triangle Park; the Healing Garden and our Blue Star marker. The donation of gardening magazines was so well received that we will once again contribute to the assisted living centers, hospitals and schools in our area.
Our fundraisers will be our annual luncheon/style show, which is always a fun event, Belk Charity Day sale and something new, a Rummage Sale. The proceeds from these events support the scholarship given each year to a deserving senior at Covington High as well as many other activities that our club supports.
Don’t forget to follow us on Facebook and our website. Please participate when you can and let’s join together in “Planting Seeds of Kindness for a Garden of Friends.”
Sincerely,
Kyle Martin
