Dear Covington Garden Club Members,
Have you ever gone outside in the early morning to enjoy the sunrise and then encountered a bird singing a song of joy and greetings? I realized I was smiling, all alone with the bird! There she was, at the top of a tall pine, surveying the neighborhood, and probably signaling to other birds the news of the day. My thoughts wandered to habitats. Where do birds stay when we don’t see them?
This moment in time led to other songs in the garden: frogs croaking, bees humming, squirrels chattering. You can add your garden favorites to the list! It has made me more aware of my surroundings, and it’s fun to listen to what I am hearing.
What can we do as gardeners to help them survive and thrive? What can we plant to compensate for the loss of trees and habitat due to human expansion and economic development? Let’s prepare ourselves and others for today and the future.
How will we do that? Our programs this year will reflect your requests for “hands on” activities, for proper pruning techniques to encourage growth, planning low maintenance gardens, controlling invasive plants and especially, attracting birds to your yard!
Our Fashion Show and Luncheon, Christmas Tea, and Flower Show will give us plenty of opportunities to share our club camaraderie with friends. We will come together to learn, experience, and discover “Songs, Seeds, and Smiles” this coming year in our circle of gardeners.
